The Creator Made Them Male and Female

Title: The Creator Made Them Male and Female

I just finished watching a television video clip of an interview between journalist Diane Sawyer and gold medal Olympian Bruce Jenner – and I have to say I’m shocked by what I saw and heard. Evidently former decathlon athlete Jenner, formerly known as the greatest male athlete in the world after his Olympic victory, is “transitioning” from male to female through drugs and surgical sex-change operations. And from all indication Sawyer thought this was something to encourage, affirm and celebrate! During the whole interview there was not even a hint that it indeed might be wrong. Although the Bible was discussed and its prohibition against a male wearing female clothes and vice versa, these teachings were casually dismissed and ignored. Diane Sawyer actually quoted from Deuteronomy 22:5, “A woman must not wear men’s clothing, nor a man wear women’s clothing, for the Lord your God detests anyone who does this.” And Jenner himself was familiar with the passage, since as he claims, he is a religious person. But nothing more is said to affirm or deny the passage; it’s just passed over. He talked about God perhaps giving him a beautiful life but then also throwing him a twist by giving him the mind of a woman in the body of a man. Now it’s really difficult to sit and watch such nonsense because here is a man who once embodied the greatest symbol of masculinity – winning the Olympic decathlon event, which is widely seen as the determining standard for the world’s greatest athlete – and now we hear he’s really “a woman trapped in a man’s body.” His solution, and the subject of the interview, is he’s gradually transitioning into a woman so that eventually at some point he’ll actually look more like a woman and then supposedly he’ll feel for the first time like a whole person. And this prime time television interview was aired and watched by millions and millions of people all around the world. It saddens me to think of how many young, impressionable minds will hear this foolishness and start to think maybe they too need to “transition” from male to female or female to male. So what are we to think about such things as Christians? It appears that the culture at large is accepting and even approving of such transitioning. The media seems to be totally on board with the idea of “a woman trapped in a man’s body” and desiring to “transition” into a different body. President Obama and many or most politicians today seem to be okay with the idea. Academia and education are going along with it. And it seems to be gaining wide acceptance in more and more areas of society. But as Christians we need to ask, “What does God think?” Or more importantly, “What does God command in his Word?” To help sort all this out, let’s review a number of biblical passages that help us response to what strange things we’re witnessing today.

First, the key biblical passage pertaining to transgenderism is found in the teachings of Jesus in the New Testament. Matthew 19:4-6, “’Haven’t you read, he replied, ‘that at the beginning the Creator made them male and female, and said, For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together let no man separate.” Now this teaching of Jesus is important because it makes a number of key points. It’s actually a quote of two other biblical passages – Genesis 1:27 where it says God created male and female, and Genesis 2:24 where it says a man will leave father and mother and be joined to his wife. So Jesus links Old Testament teaching with his own New Testament teaching to lay the foundation of a proper understanding of gender and sexuality. He teaches that the Creator God the Father made two sexes, male and female, and that they are made to compliment each other. This rules out all homosexual and transgender relationships. How can it not? If God created the human race with two sexes, male and female, then it’s important to recognize this and not violate that sacred order, since it was established by God from the beginning. But what we see today is men and women rebelling against the Creator’s order and deciding for themselves whether or not they’ll accept God’s created order for them in life. Whether he knows it or not, Bruce Jenner is a man, a male. He has all the characteristics of maleness. God made him male. But the problem is in his mind; he’s confused. So in order to set things straight, he’s decided to change his body rather than change his mind. Now you’d think someone in his situation would work on getting his mind in line with his body, but that would mean repenting or changing his mind, evidently something he’s unwilling to do. So he’s electing to mutilate his body – for that is what it is, so-called transitioning is mutilating a perfectly good body through drugs and surgery to resemble the body of the opposite sex. Rather than seeking to bring his mind in line with his body, he’s attempting to bring his body in line with his confused mind. This goes totally against the created order of God. If God made them male and female from the beginning as Jesus teaches, then Bruce Jenner and all so-called transgender people need to submit to the will of God and embrace the gender God made them, male or female. If they have a male body, they are male. If they have a female body, they are female. Their body is not confused, only their mind. It’s foolishness to purse a course of rebellion against God’s created order in nature. Only the sinful effects of the Fall would prompt someone like Jenner to take the course he’s taking. It is contrary to the teachings of Jesus and the Bible.

Second, the Old Testament prohibition against cross-dressing still applies today. Deuteronomy 22:5, “A woman must not wear men’s clothing, nor a man wear women’s clothing, for the Lord your God detests anyone who does this.” Now as we all know there are many commands, rules and regulations in the Old Testament given by God to the Jews. Not all of them, consequently, apply to all people at all times. Some were given specifically for the Jews in a particular time and place. While many still do apply today because of their universal moral character. For example, prohibitions against murder given in the Old Testament obviously still apply today because murder is still a universal binding sin. It’s prohibition is as absolute today as it was back in ancient times. That doesn’t mean there aren’t differences between killing, for example in self-defense, and so forth, and murder; there are. But murder per se is still wrong, it’s still a sin. Well, the principle of confusing or confounding the sexes is still wrong, still prohibited by God. It is sinful and wrong to confuse masculinity with femininity today, just as it was in ancient times when the prohibition was originally given by God. Again, we can talk about what constitutes masculinity and femininity, what is considered confusing and what is not, but the principle remains the same – God opposes any gender confusion. Just as Jesus taught by quoting the Old Testament teaching in Genesis, “At the beginning the Creator made them male and female.” And because God created them male and female, it’s sinful and wrong to confuse the differences between male and female. But in society today we are seeing the difference between male and female deliberately confused. By law in some states it’s possible for a man to enter a women’s restroom solely on the basis that he identifies as female. If a woman complains about it she’s rebuked and labeled bigoted, homophobic and insensitive. This is confusion. In other cases, schoolchildren are allowed to cross-dress in school and identify as the opposite sex solely on the basis of how they feel about themselves at any given moment. This is massive confusion on a grand scale. We’re seeing what the Apostle Paul describes in Roman 1:22, “But their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.” As society rebels further and further from God human hearts and minds become darkened and foolish. We’re seeing this working it’s way out before our eyes today. Our society is growing dark, morally and spiritually, and one of the results is gender confusion. Bruce Jenner is a result and a further cause of this confusion.

Third, what we are seeing today is spiritual and moral rebellion, plain and simple. Romans 1:28, 32, “Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. . . . Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.” We see a perfect description of how sin works its way through a rebellious society in the writings of the Apostle Paul in the early chapters of the Book of Romans. I encourage people to reread these chapters to get a comprehensive understanding of the moral depravity of our times today. But I find it interesting that in the television interview both Bruce Jenner and Diane Sawyer raise the biblical prohibition about cross-dressing, yet ignore the teaching. They both act like they are familiar with the Old Testament passage, but then they both dismiss it. That’s what the Apostle Paul says happens when society is in a state of moral and spiritual rebellion, “Although they know God’s righteous decree . . . they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.” The media in nearly all forms such as television, radio, print, and so forth, actively promote homosexuality and transgenderism, which is accurately expressed by the totally positive attitude of Diane Sawyer and ABC during the interview. Jenner himself is excited about his new transgender path. Even though they both know that God prohibits it, they not only endorse it and promote it, but seek to recruit others to celebrate it as well. Anyone who objects to such moral perversity and foolishness is mercilessly attacked, vilified and marginalized in society today. The so-called LGBT community is ruthless in whom it seeks to destroy; it’s “take no prisoners approach” threatens and intimidates most people today into silence. Good and godly men, such as Dr. James Dobson, are so ostracized and marginalized that they’re often forced to resign from their positions of leadership in organizations or driven into financial bankruptcy. In Dobson’s case, he chose to resign from Focus on the Family rather than see it driven into financial ruin by gay activist protesters. Christian politicians are pressured to tow the LGBT party line or run into dirty tricks smear campaigns during their re-election runs. Pastors and church leaders are also threatened and intimidated by activists to either support the LGBT agenda or keep silent and not oppose. If they speak out or against any aspect of the agenda they are smeared publicly and scandalized. Unfortunately, many or most Christians are influenced and swayed by such propaganda.

But of course this was all predicted years ago by Christian thinkers such as Francis Schaeffer who warned that such dark days were coming. He could see the writing on the wall. First there was the sexual revolution of the 60s. Next came the promiscuous living and cohabitation of the 70’s. In the 80s we saw the rise of homosexuality and AIDS. The 90s brought a normalizing of all immorality as the newer generations settled into casual sex in all forms. The first decade of the new millennium saw the growth of the political power of moral perversity, leading eventually to the first president in American history to endorse sexual depravity when Barack Obama came out in favor of so-called gay marriage. In the years that followed all kinds of immoral pollution have spread to where we are today – the transgender revolution. The redefinition of marriage is well underway in order to define it in any shape or form. With amazing speed our society has nearly given up the biblical definition of marriage as a man and woman; now it can include members of the same sex. But this isn’t the end of the moral slide downward. As the ABC interview noted, the next step in the depravity revolution is to normalize transgenderism in society. Earlier transgender individuals are now called “pioneers.” The same kind of fake and bogus history that gay activists created in order to transform society towards their homosexual vision, now is being applied to the issue of transgenderism. But we shouldn’t think it will stop with transgender advancement. In the LGBT acronym now with transgender rights being pushed the next agenda item will be bi-sexual rights. How might that take shape? We can guess, but it no doubt will entail some more redefining of marriage to include some form of polygamy, or in other words, two men and a woman, or two women and a man, and so forth. If, as all gay activism assumes, the individuals sexual preferences must be considered of prime importance, who could then deny a bi-sexual person – someone who desires sex with both genders, male and female – who could then deny them the right to marry members of both genders? If one’s sexual feelings are absolute, then there would be no logical reason for denying a bi-sexual to marry both a man and a woman, thus making for a three person marriage. While this isn’t the typical polygamous arrangement, it is polygamy nonetheless. So we should, in the years to come, expect polygamy to become legal in all fifty states. It’s only a matter of time. Will the slide stop here? I doubt it. Just as Paul says in Romans, “They invent new ways of doing evil,” Romans 1:30. Brothers and sisters, pray that God ends this folly and returns our society to moral sanity before it’s too late.
