What prompted my message series on Bible X-Files was a television series on the History Channel called Ancient Aliens. These shows attempted to build the case for ancient aliens visiting the planet earth thousands of years ago and influencing primitive cultures around the globe. Much of the world’s religions are supposedly traced back to ancient alien visitations.  Against this ancient astronaut theory I’ve tried to argue that aliens haven’t been visiting and influencing human cultures for thousands of years, but instead fallen angelic creatures called demons have been interacting with humanity – and this accounts for many of the encounters that might appear to be alien in nature. Personally, I don’t believe there are any space aliens in existence – certainly there isn’t any direct evidence for them. But even if there were aliens somewhere out in the universe, even if God created other beings besides us on earth, their mere existence doesn’t pose any direct threat to Christianity. If aliens – the real McCoy – were to show up on earth and they started promoting a different spiritual worldview from Christianity, that would be a point of contradiction and conflict, but only in a way that any other major religion poses a challenge to the Christian faith. If real aliens came to the planet earth and they didn’t know the Christian gospel message, we’d seek to evangelize them as we would anyone who doesn’t know the saving grace of God. But I can easily imagine that someone might object to my understanding that demons are behind alleged alien encounters and UFO sightings. Many people would say that real aliens and real UFOs make more sense than explaining things with demonic activity. Many people today would indeed say that because many people today have affectively abandoned the Christian faith and the biblical understanding of reality. In other words, having lost a truly biblical worldview many people today feel that real aliens and real UFOs make for a better explanation of alleged experiences and encounters people claim. But I have to remind everyone, again, there is no direct evidence that aliens or beings from another world even exist or that UFOs are real. Yes, there are personal experiences and encounters with something real, and there are shaky video and still picture images of something in the skies, but again, all of these amount only to circumstantial evidence. But in the case of demonic beings, we have the authority of the Bible to their objective existence. The same Bible that tells us about God, tells us about the Devil; the same Bible that describes Jesus, describes demons. Any real Christian who believes in God, believes in the Devil; any true Christian who believes in heaven, believes in hell; any real Christian who believes in angels, believes also in demons. So we already have beings or creatures in our belief system that can account for much or most of the alleged alien activity. But let me try to explain further.

First, demons are real and can lie and deceive. 2 Thessalonians 2:9-10, “The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.” Here’s a description of the coming of the so-called anti-Christ at the end times. Notice it says that his coming will be “in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, and in every sort of evil that deceives.” So here is a reference to Satan’s counterfeit miracles and signs and wonders that deceive people. It doesn’t give us any details as to what exactly these counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders are, but it says they are for the purpose of deception. Here’s a model for understanding so-called alien experiences and encounters. They could possibly be and probably are Satanic or demonic counterfeit signs and wonders for the purpose of deceiving people into thinking that earth is being visited by extra-terrestrials. The very coming of the biblical anti-Christ could very well be presented as an extra-terrestrial, because imagine the respect and attention such a figure would receive on earth among all cultures. And then imagine if this supposed alien from outer space exhibited superior intelligence and abilities – in other words, claimed to come from an advanced civilization. It’s easy to imagine almost everyone being taken in by such a figure. It’s easy to imagine that such a being could lead the world astray, despite, no doubt, the protests of Christians. This could all be manufactured by the Devil and his demons, that is, the original Satan and his fallen angels. But today, I can hear someone questioning the very existence of demon spirits, and hence the foundation upon which my explanation rests. My response is, either there are angels and demons, or the entire Bible, from cover to cover is wrong, the entire Christian faith is wrong, and the whole Christian church is wrong. Angels and demons are so embedded in Christianity that they simply can’t be denied without destroying the whole Christian faith. Most people believe in angels – and if they think about it long enough, they also reluctantly believe in fallen angels too. What made The Exorcist movie so scary to millions of Americans is that they believed it to be basically true, or at least possible. Demons, unfortunately, are real. Their reality gives us a plausible and reasonable basis for explaining supposed alien experiences and encounters. They are described in the Bible as deceivers and liars, so projecting or staging the whole modern alien mythology among earth’s population today makes sense, knowing what we already know about them.

Second, demons in reality are a sort of alien or extra-terrestrial being. Luke 10:17-20, “The seventy-two returned with joy and said, ‘Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.’ He replied, ‘I saw Satan fall like lighting from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the powers of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.’” In a sense, there is a way of looking at Satan and demons as sort of aliens invading humanity on earth. Jesus says, “I saw Satan fall like lighting from heaven.” Although this is no doubt a reference to a spiritual reality not a physical happening, still, the imagery is of the enemy coming down from the skies or falling from the heavens to the earth. So there is in a sense a parallel between how spirit demons move and how so-called extra-terrestrials might operate. Of course, demons aren’t necessarily from another planet – they probably aren’t aligned with any physical or material place in the universe, because they are spirits who don’t need the laws of physics to exist. According to the Bible, their chief interest seems to lay on earth because that’s where the people they are trying to lead astray exist. If man in the future colonizes the moon or Mars, then no doubt, demons would occupy a presence there in addition to earth. But in many respects demonic spirits in fact operate like the present alien mythology describes extra-terrestrials. Demons can travel quickly from one place to another. They can perform superhuman powerful feats and cause supernatural signs and wonders to occur. They are also privy to superior knowledge. The Bible describes the Devil and demons as powerful beings. The Book of Revelation describes battles between the powerful good angels and the fallen angels in violent terms – it makes you wonder what these clashes might appear like on earth. Could at least some of the UFO sightings people report be the result of spiritual battles taking place between angels and demons in the skies? And in the past, demons could have influenced ancient cultures, because after all we have examples in the Bible where righteous angels appear on earth and influence people for good, for example, angels visiting Abraham in Genesis 18. Could not fallen angels have influenced ancient humans for ill? My point is that we don’t need real aliens to explain the alleged alien experiences and UFO sightings today; these can be explained by demonic deception or demonic activity on earth.

Third, we don’t know what spirit demons are fully capable of on earth. 2 Corinthians 2:11, “In order that Satan might no outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes,” 1 John 4:1, “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God. . . .” According to the Book of Revelation, “The great dragon was hurled down – that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled down to the earth, and his angels with him.” So at least sometimes, the Devil and his demons are capable of  “leading the whole world astray.” That’s a vast power fallen angels wield, although it doesn’t say how this great deception is accomplished in details. The Devil is also called in the Bible, “the god of this age,” 2 Corinthians 4:4 and “the prince of the powers of the air,” Ephesians 2:2. We might ask the question, “How far can fallen spirits go in deceiving the earth?” Or, “How big a deception can demons pull off?” Can the Devil and demons, for example, cause a commotion in the skies over a city with lights and flashes that appear to be UFOs? Are they capable of causing fear and panic in this way? We know demons can possess persons under the right conditions, maybe not exactly like the Exorcist movie depicts, but to some degree or another. If possession is possible, is it possible for demons to project alien experiences and encounters into the minds of certain types of people? Could demons implant false and misleading memories into the minds of select persons who later supposedly recall alien abductions under hypnotism? What are the full capabilities of demons to deceive and lead astray? We don’t exactly know. But we do know from the Bible that, “Your enemy the Devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour,” 1 Peter 5:8. Admittedly, when I first heard the suggestion that alien experiences and encounters and UFOs could possibly be demonic deceptions I thought it was a strange idea. At one time I was more open to the idea there really were “little green men” or extra-terrestrials secretly visiting the planet earth. But the more I learn about the deceptive powers of demons from the Bible and from the experience of 2000 years of Christian church history, I have come to believe that everything that is currently being credited to aliens and UFOs can be better explained by fallen spirits.  Consider how most alleged alien sightings are always “out of the corner of the eye” and a “fleeting glimpse” or from a “fuzzy photo” or “shaky video image.” Why is that always the case? Why can’t by now after all these years we capture aliens clearly in print or video? It makes you wonder whether these supposed experiences and encounters or appearances are being manufactured or staged by deceiving spirits. According to the Bible it’s totally possible.

In our modern, secular godless age we are opening ourselves up to great deception and misleading because we dismiss the spiritual reality. With the rise of modern science our society has taken a materialistic turn and now purely physical and natural explanations are given for everything. More and more people routinely dismiss the spiritual reality altogether. That’s a mistake. We are opening ourselves up to great spiritual deception by fallen angels or demons who are more than happy to play on our anti-supernatural prejudices and lead us to believe in space aliens and UFOs instead. The project for the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence or SETI is opening itself for great deception because whether scientists believe it or not demonic spirits are capable of creating noises emanating from outer space. Imagine SETI is exploring a vast region in our universe and all of a sudden a non-random sequence of sounds occurs. Scientists are all excited, so they send a binary message out into space with the hopes that aliens will receive it and reply. Lo and behold they get a reply from some extra-terrestrial intelligence. Earth is all abuzz because finally it is confirmed that “We are not alone,” there is intelligent life beyond earth, and so forth. Here’s the problem. How do we know that we aren’t being deceived by demonic spirits? Are they capable of traveling in space? Are they capable of making noises out in space, even in non-random sequence? Of course. But because modern, secular scientists have cut themselves off from biblical and Christian truth they’ll automatically believe in the extra-terrestrial theory instead of the possibility of demonic deception. We may be faced with the choice of believing in aliens or believing in demonic deception in the years to come. We may wake up one morning and turn on the radio or television and hear that alien contact has occurred. We need to be very cautious and careful not to believe it. Again, I don’t rule out entirely the possibility that there actually could be life somewhere else in the universe, but I won’t believe any alleged contacts with aliens until I’ve ruled out the possibility of demonic deception. Satan, according to the Bible, is a very powerful, fallen angel. He once stood close to God in the spiritual heavens. He is intelligent and experienced. He’s been around for a long time and knows all the tricks of the trade of deception. The Bible says he leads the whole world astray, so he’s no amateur at lies and deceits. I’m inclined to believe that we are currently being deceived by demons rather than encountering aliens directly. This makes the most sense.
