The Big Cover-Up

Title: The Big Cover-Up

The last time our government was involved in a cover-up was during the Watergate era of the late 70s. Although an entire branch of government, the executive branch, had all the power, position, and privileges to suppress the truth, it eventually came out. And it cost Richard Nixon the presidency. There are other kinds of cover-ups in our society, but maybe the biggest one is our secular society’s cover-up of God’s creation with the theory of evolution. Before Charles Darwin and his theory of evolution, when people used to look into the night sky at the stars, their thoughts were lifted to the God who created them, and they gave glory to God. Now, since the theory of evolution, and since its promotion by secular society, when people look up into the sky at night, they only see pretty bright lights, fiery balls of gas swirling around the galaxy as a result of a cosmic explosion of unknown cause. Their thoughts are not lifted to God but to the unknown, random, purposeless, natural force of evolution. Or when people visit the woods, hiking, camping, or exploring nature, whereas before evolution became so heavily promoted in schools, colleges, and in society, people saw the marvelous wonders of God’s creative hand in the variety of animals and plants, the awesome designs that were displayed in every aspect of nature. But now, after the indoctrination of evolution in society, people visit the woods but largely miss the evidences of God’s creation and the spiritual inspirations that the created order gives to the soul. The Apostle Paul, writing 2000 years ago, predicted all of this with uncanny accuracy in the first chapter of the Book of Romans. Paul spoke of people who “suppress the truth,” (18) “since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.” (19) He says, “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.” (20) Then he says, “For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.” (21-22) Finally, “They exchanged the truth of God for a lie and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator, who is forever praised. Amen.” (25) So according to the Apostle Paul, people who suppress the truth of God’s creation, and people who exchange the glory due God for glory to natural things are deserving of God’s judgment because they are living a lie. That is the big cover-up of our time, society denying the reality and glory of God by teaching a lie that robs God of His glory and gives nature (what he created) the glory or even worse gives people glory (for figuring out the clever theory). Either way, the truth of God is covered-up, and the glory that is due Him is denied. This, Paul says, provokes the righteous wrath of God’s judgment upon the earth. But the Apostle exposes this great cover-up. We don’t have to be deceived. We can appreciate God’s hand in creation, and give Him His proper glory by seeing nature as it really is, not as society teaches it is. Here’s how.

First, We don’t have to cover-up God’s truth. Paul talks about people who “suppress the truth by their wickedness” Romans 1:18. By coming humbly to God, confessing and repenting of our sins, and by placing our unqualified faith in Jesus Christ for forgiveness and salvation, there are no spiritual barriers left between us and God. We don’t need to deny or suppress the truth of God anymore. Only those people who aren’t right with God or aren’t sure where they stand with God have motivation to suppress or deny His truths. People who are not right with God try to avoid God, avoid any mention of God, or anything that might remind them of God, since they are not right with God they are uneasy with anything to do with God. Evolution is the greatest invention of mankind to avoid being reminded of God. Evolution is the greatest attempt of mankind to cover-up evidences for God in the natural world. The Apostle Paul says further, “For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened,” (21). According to Paul, people know about God from nature, yet because they are unwilling to praise and worship and give thanks to God they deny God’s hand in nature and talk themselves out of seeing anything. By doing so their minds become darkened and foolish. But Christians don’t have to follow such foolishness. Since Christians are people who have been forgiven of sins and have been given eternal life through Jesus Christ, there is no motivation to deny or suppress any of God’s truths found in nature. Christians are free to enjoy the inspiration and awesome truth of God visibly displayed in all of God’s creation. Christians can marvel at how design and rationality is found at all levels of nature, from the smallest to the largest parts. Christians don’t have to say stupid things like, “It looks like it was designed, but it wasn’t, it evolved.” Instead, they can say, “This looks like it was designed, but of course it was, by God, a long time ago.” Christians don’t have to make excuses for why the earth looks like it was designed to support life, because they can readily acknowledge that earth was designed by God for life, and point to the abundance of evidences that confirm it. The cover-up of God’s truths by evolution is a lot like the cover-up attempted by the inventors of the Emperor’s Clothes. The well-known fairy tale about how some con men tried to convince everyone in the kingdom, including the king himself, that he was wearing a specially fine cloth that was invisible yet real. It took a tiny child to say the obvious, “The king isn’t wearing anything!” So too, evolution is trying to convince everyone that there is no Creator against all the evidences to the contrary. So the first thing Christians can do is refuse to play along with the cover-up of evolution. But there is more.

Second, we should point out the evidences of God’s hand in nature. We shouldn’t go along with the cover-up of evolution, but then we should go on the offensive and point out the positive evidences of God, and glorify God because of them. Paul says, “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse,” Romans 1:20. First, we should refuse to suppress the truth, refuse to deny God’s truth through convoluted reasoning and twisted arguments designed by those who refuse to worship God. Second, we should go one step further and point out all the glories of God in nature, and use these instances as an excuse to worship and serve God. Through the atoning blood of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, Christians are made right with God. They don’t have to fear judgment or eternal punishment for sins. They are no longer alienated from God. There is no reason to deny or suppress the truth of God anymore. Christians are free to enjoy all the evidences of God in the created world. Paul says that God’s invisible qualities and divine nature are clearly seen in the natural world. With this being the case, we should go point-by-point through nature and point out each particular instance where God’s hand is visible, instead of trying to cover-up evidence for God at every point, as the theory of evolution tries to do. That doesn’t mean Christians can’t recognize God at work in natural processes, it just means that we are able to trace all things back to a wise Creator, and then worship that Creator. It means that in churches, Christians, will gather and worship, praise, and thank God for things observed in nature, not just through the words of songs. Christians have been so intimidated for many years by the teachings of evolution that many or most natural evidences of God are excluded from church worship. Only a few hymns such as “How Great Thou Art” are left for Christians to ponder and reflect on the glory of God in nature. Most Christian worship omits reference to evidences of nature in praise and thanksgiving. That’s because many Christians are intimidated by the teachings evolution and want to avoid a conflict between it and Christianity. But Christians shouldn’t be afraid of evolution because it is based on denial, suppression, and the obfuscation of truth. When we look out into space, why is it that there seems to be design? Why does there seem to be a designer behind it all? Because there is a Designer behind it all. Why does nature seem to be the product of a rational intelligence? Because there is a rational intelligence behind it all. Because Christians have no reason to suppress or deny God or God’s truths, we should point out evidences for God and glorify God through them. But there is something else.

Third, we should avoid the idolatry that evolution promotes. “For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise they became as fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. . . . They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worship and served created things rather than the Creator, who is forever praised. Amen,” Romans 1:21-23, 25. According to the Apostle Paul, it is idolatry to exchange the glorification of God for a created thing. Idolatry is worshipping or glorifying or supremely valuing any created thing above the Creator. That is exactly what people who follow the teachings of evolution do. Evolution is a recipe for idolatry. It forces people to stand in awe of nature rather than stand in awe of the God of nature. It trains people to marvel at the creation but not the Creator. Evolution is the most sophisticated form of idolatry ever invented by man. When the Apostle Paul says, “They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worship and serve created things rather than the Creator” he is describing consistent followers of the theory of evolution. They do exchange the truth of God for lies, they do worship created things rather than the Creator. But the danger of the theory of evolution is that it trains others to exchange the truth of God for a lie, it seeks to teach us all to worship and serve created things rather than the Creator. It does this by first denying or suppressing evidences of God in nature; second, by denying a need for God at all in nature by promoting natural evolution instead; and finally, inviting us all to stand in awe of a natural process or human genius in discovering the natural process. The worship of God for designing and operating nature is replaced by either the worship of that nature itself or the worship of man’s genius in figuring it all out. In either case, the glory shifts from God to either nature or man himself, which is idolatry. It’s hard to see how the Apostle Paul could have described it any better, “For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.” They knew of God, but they refused to think about God because that might lead them to the God whom they are seeking to avoid. So they suppress or deny whatever evidences of God they observe in nature, and they use the theory of evolution to do it. Then, as they suppress all evidence of God, explaining it away with evolution, their minds are confused even more as they build theories upon theories until in their own thinking God plays no part in reality at all. We must avoid following along in a thought process that eventually leads to full-blown atheism.

Today, we live in a time when the theory of evolution is becoming established in every aspect of modern society. The glory that once came naturally to mind when we looked up into the night sky, or experienced the natural world is being stolen from God. In place of the glory of God is being substituted a false idol, evolution. This idol either glorifies nature itself, or glorifies human reasoning, and robs God of the glory due Him as Creator and God. It also robs Christians of experiencing the worship of God in our world as the false evolutionary view of reality permeates into more and more areas of society. There is no question that evolution has robbed God of the glory due Him even in the Christian church. As a result of the wide-spread acceptance of the theory of evolution, worship of God is confined almost exclusively to music in churches, instead of everywhere in the natural world. There is an old hymn that expresses the view before the theory of evolution gained popularity, it goes, “This is my Father’s world, and to my listening ear, all nature sings and round me rings the music of the spheres. This is my Father’s world, I rest me in the thought, of rocks and trees of skies and seas, His hands the wonders wrought.” It was written by a pastor from New York state at the end of the 19th century, Maltbie Babock, who before taking hikes each day in the woods would tell his wife, “I’m going out to see my Father’s world.” That older vision of seeing God in God’s creation is now largely lost because of the idolatry of the theory of evolution. The second verse to that great old hymn is: “This is my Father’s world, the birds their carols raise, The morning light, the lily white, declare their Maker’s praise. This is my Father’s world: He shines in all that’s fair; in the rustling grass I hear Him pass; He speaks to me everywhere. This is my Father’s world. O let me ne’er forget: That though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet. This is my Father’s world: the battle is not done; Jesus who died shall be satisfied, and earth and heaven be one.” Older hymns like this one were inspired by the Psalms, such as Psalm 19:1-4, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.” But today, because of the idolatry of the theory of evolution, the denial and suppression of truth, and the darkening and foolishness of contemporary thinking, the obvious truths of God are obscured. As Christians we must resist the theory of evolution’s cover-up of God’s truth in society and in our churches. We must make known the glories of God in nature. We must refuse to worship or serve the idols of man or nature. We must worship God and God alone.
